Nothing like you’ve had at home (but don’t worry about the weird stuff you’ve heard about)

By now you’ve learned there’s nothing authentically Chinese about a fortune cookie. And you’ve probably seen pictures of fried chickens’ feet and are wondering if those will be on your plate when you’re here.

Don’t panic. The food you’ll encounter on your trip is not going to reach up off your plate and grab your shirt. Most of it is immediately recognizable, and you’ll eat well. There are foods that you won’t have seen before, but that’s part of the fun.

And when you get home, you’ll want to ask for the “secret menu” at your local Chinese restaurant.

In this section we will talk about foods good and bad, familiar and funny. And yes, you really should learn how to use chopsticks.
