The electrical systems in the various regions of China were built at different times under different standards, sometimes home-grown technology and sometimes foreign. Unfortunately, this means there is no national standard for electric plugs.
Before you go, be sure to pick up a set of plug converters – you will want a product that provides you with several types, as if you were traveling to several countries. People we’ve talked with report you do not have to pack voltage converters; your computer, cellphone, camera/video, and iPod chargers will work just fine. Leave your hairdryer at home, as your hotel bathroom will have one.
You will need to hunt around your room to find an outlet; your lamps are hardwired into the wall to your room’s master control panel. Look by the desk; it may be your only free outlet. When you get on your hands and knees to fumble around under the table, be sure to bring your plug converters, because it is likely you will have to try a couple plugs before finding one that fits.
At each hotel of your trip, you’ll get to repeat this process of discovery. It’s all part of the adventure!
Don’t forget to unplug your converter and put it back in your bag when you’re done charging your batteries – you do not want to misplace that plug!
