You’ll quickly notice two things about the beds you’ll likely come across on your adoption trip.

First, they are almost always singles.  Two single beds separated by a nightstand, just like an old episode of I Love Lucy. The queen- or king-size beds we’re used to in Western hotels are rare in China, outside of the high-end multinational chains catering to business travelers.  If queen mattresses exist at our hotel, they’re in the most expensive suites … even at the White Swan.

The second observation will come as you sit down on the bed.  It has a mattress, sheets, and blankets as you’d expect.  But no springs, no memory foam, certainly not one of those Sleep Number™ jobs.  No fluff.  Basically, you’ll be sleeping on a board for the next two weeks.

There is no problem with kids jumping on the beds in a Chinese hotel.

The extra pillows are in the cabinet under the TV.  You’ll need them.
